Noomá: food, faith and conversation

Noomá is a friendly space for people to discuss faith, life, and everything. The conversation is friendly and illuminating, and there’s great food, too. But beyond food and conversation, there’s sometimes poetry, spoken word, music, storytelling, etc.

Noomá’s a great place for those who reckon there’s more to life than we see. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a person of faith, trying to work things out, or are just plain curious. Each Noomá session is always engaging and always fun, but in the end, it challenges your thinking. We talk about ethics, theology, community, the economy, etc. Noomá is deeply rooted in Christianity, but we guarantee you, no one is asked to sign on the dotted line, it’s all about great conversation. Each session is facilitated by a subject matter expert who really knows their onions – social justice, economics, ethics, personhood, relationships, you name it.

Noomá will be held every last Sunday of the month at Custom House Baptist Church’s new Café 3:16, and it will also be held at other venues across Newham. To find out more about Noomá, please visit www.nooma.org.uk, and don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter if you want to stay in the loop.

And in case you’re wondering, the word NOOMA comes from a phonetic spelling of the Greek word πνευμα (pneuma), meaning “wind or spirit.” It’s a word prominently featured in Christian spirituality and has roots in the happenings at Pentecost. You’ll find more on Pentecost in the second chapter of Acts in the Bible. An excerpt from that chapter reads:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4)

And that was how the church started 2000 years ago, in the power of the Spirit.
